WASHINGTON –Men in their 40s are increasingly turning to erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments, and there are promising alternatives available.
The most promising option is a medication called Levitra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. But it has some side effects, especially in people who do not have ED.
It’s available as a generic drug, or as a pill. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps men get and keep an erection.
Levitra comes in three forms: a lower-dose version, a higher-dose version, and a combination pill, which is taken daily for up to 36 hours.
It can help men with ED get and keep an erection that lasts for longer than 36 hours.
The active ingredient in Levitra is vardenafil, a medication that has been shown to increase the time it takes for men to get an erection when using an ED pill.
Doctors recommend taking Levitra by mouth with a glass of water, and it is effective in about 70 percent of men with ED.
“When you take it, you feel the same,” Dr. Mark H. McNeil, a urologist at St. Luke’s Roman Hospital in St. Luke’s, said in an interview. “The pill won’t make you a big, bigger penis. You’ll have to get over your underlying issues.”
“If you’re not going to get an erection for 36 hours or more, that’s not going to make you a big, bigger penis,” he said. “The thing is, if you’re going to get an erection, you want to have it for as long as you’re taking it.”
The medication is available in tablet form, with or without an orange pill.
The only downside to taking Levitra is that it can take up to 36 hours to work, which may take longer to get the full effects.
The pill also comes with a warning about possible allergic reactions to vardenafil, such as hives, itching, or trouble breathing.
A doctor will tell you when to seek emergency medical help for ED, even if there’s no underlying cause.

In addition, men should be monitored for signs of a serious allergic reaction to vardenafil, like hives, itching, or difficulty breathing.
