WASHINGTON (AP) — U. S. regulators said Monday they are investigating more than 100 cases of a new type of drug that could be used to treat impotence in men with erectile dysfunction.

In a new warning, doctors say the Food and Drug Administration has found that an erection-boosting medication, called PDE5i, could lead to erectile dysfunction in some men with erectile dysfunction.

The FDA has not given a black box warning about the potential for the drug to cause erectile dysfunction, and only has a limited indication about the drug in cases that have been reported.

Men with erectile dysfunction and other issues with their ability to get and maintain an erection may be able to safely use the drug, said Dr. Janet Woodcock, the lead urologist for the FDA's Office of Drug Safety.

Possible side effects include headaches, stomach pain, dizziness and mood changes, she said.

Pelosi Men's Health, which operates as a private, nonprofit sexual health clinic in Atlanta, said in a statement that the agency has "great confidence" in the drug, and it has "strong safety and efficacy data" for the medication.

"This is a serious drug and an extremely dangerous practice," the company said in a statement.

The FDA says it has "very limited information" about PDE5i use in patients who have heart failure or have heart problems, and that "other potential side effects" have not been identified.

Pelosi Men's said the company has tested the drug in more than 8,000 men with heart problems and has received more than 100 positive reports of sexual dysfunction, but the results have been inconclusive.

"While PDE5i is effective in some cases, more research is needed to confirm these results and to determine if this drug is safe and effective in all cases," the FDA said in a statement.

The drug may have an effect on the nerves that supply blood to the penis, making it harder to get and maintain an erection.

"This study indicates that this drug may have serious side effects such as an erection that is painful, dangerous and life-threatening," the FDA said in a statement.

Some experts said the FDA is now reviewing whether it can recommend a more appropriate treatment, such as a heart test, to treat the condition.

"We are having trouble reaching a consensus among the physicians who are making the decision to prescribe the drug," said Dr. Jane Zealand, a urologist at the University of Michigan's zithromax. "It's time to make a decision based on our experience."

In one of the most recent studies to be published in the, the FDA found that PDE5i was associated with erectile dysfunction in men who were taking the drug in a study of more than 3,000 patients.A new study of men with erectile dysfunction that was published last year in theJournal of Urologyhas found that men taking the drug in a study of more than 2,700 men may be able to maintain or improve an erection that lasted four to six hours, compared to men who took a placebo. The study involved more than 2,000 men, with the men taking PDE5i in combination with other medications, compared with a placebo.

Pelosi Men's said it was based on a small number of men who were taking the drug and the results are not conclusive, but the drug may help people with certain types of erectile dysfunction, such as those with diabetes or cardiovascular problems.

The drug, which was originally intended to be a drug for a heart condition called angina, also works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of the blood vessels, helping to improve blood flow to the penis, the study found.

In one of the new results, men who took the drug before taking an erection-boosting drug such as Viagra said the drugs gave them "a firm, reliable erection for up to four hours."

Pelosi Men's said it has received more than 100 reports of erectile dysfunction in patients who take the drug.

Dr. William H. Smith, a urologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said the FDA's decision "is a good sign that there's more than enough evidence to recommend PDE5i for men with erectile dysfunction."

The FDA said it has not received enough information to make a decision on whether PDE5i should be prescribed to patients with heart failure.

Viagra was the first pharmaceutical product to gain FDA approval for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, according to data that was released Monday. Pfizer's blockbuster prescription drug Viagra has been nicknamed the "Pfizer drug of the year" by its competitors and the generic version is the most successful drug in history, the company said Monday.

The data, which includes sales data from sales of Pfizer drugs, includes Viagra's U. S. total sales and overall product sales in the United States, as well as worldwide sales of the brand-name drug from the manufacturer, Eli Lilly.

Viagra, launched in 1998, is the company's most successful product. It sold about $3 billion in Pfizer sales in 2007. In the same period, it had sales of $1.1 billion. Viagra has been the most successful drug in history.

The U. sales of Viagra account for about 10 percent of all Pfizer's total sales, and Lilly and Pfizer's U. share price in the United States is expected to grow to a compound annual growth rate of about 10 percent by year's end.

Pfizer Inc., a biotechnology company that has been involved in the research and development of drugs for more than 25 years, said Monday it has received worldwide approval for marketing of its products in the United States.

"This is a very important milestone for us, and it's a very important milestone for Pfizer," said Jim Sage, Pfizer's executive vice president of global product marketing. "We are very pleased with the sales of Viagra today and excited to work with the company to develop the most effective product to date for Viagra."

Eli Lilly is already marketing its U. product Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It will be marketed in the United States and Europe and is expected to hit sales in 2005. Lilly said it has received FDA approval for Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, but its U. patent expires in 2007.

The company said Monday it has received approval from the FDA for marketing Viagra to treat impotence in adults. It is also marketing a drug to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, that happens when the prostate gland gets too weak to produce urine.

The company also is developing the first oral medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, called Provera, in 2006. It will be sold by Sanofi, which is developing a new treatment for the disorder. Pfizer has said the drug will have a positive effect on erectile dysfunction and is expected to generate sales of $3 billion for the company in the United States.

Viagra has been the most successful product in history, generating $3.5 billion in sales worldwide. Pfizer's U. sales for the first six years of Viagra's existence were $1.5 billion. In 2007, it generated $1.7 billion worldwide.

Eli Lilly said Monday that it had received FDA approval for marketing Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction in adults.

"This is a very important milestone for us, and it's a very important milestone for Pfizer," said Sage.

BOGDAR –

A few days ago, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to patients with a low-dose erectile dysfunction drug called Viagra.

This is the second warning issued against the drug. In February, the FDA issued the following to the US health department:

“Pfizer has received reports of serious adverse events associated with the use of this medication, including strokes and heart attacks, among US residents.”

The warning was based on the results of a large study of patients with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction who had not previously taken a low-dose erectile dysfunction drug. The drug is intended for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and has a half-life of approximately 17 hours, a duration of about 90 percent of the normal effect of the drug.

The drug was originally designed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland is enlarged. After several years of research and development, the FDA rejected the drug, and in February, the FDA issued a warning to the US health department:
